I was invited by editor and academic Matthew Chrulew to contribute a story to Phase Change, an anthology of science fiction stories themed around energy transitions, which was published by Twelfth Planet Press in 2022.

My contribution, titled “Facing Kiruna”, is set in the far north of Sweden, and takes the form of an introductory chapter to an academic biography of a Sami climate activist of the mid-C21st. It interrogates the way in which many of the proposed modes of energy transition—renewable generation, electric vehicles etc.—are tacitly switching one form of extractivism for another; it also raises the question of personhood as it might be applied to non-human entities, such as landscape elements or artificial intelligences.
